Hi everyone, it's Wendy. Dad and Jeff Jr. have been in Riverside since Wednesday and Dad finally received his first "cocktail" on Thursday afternoon. His symptoms included some chills, fever, body aches and shakes, but he powered through them just fine (after a little Demerol). The doctor and nurses were very impressed with how he was handling the treatment.
Mom and I arrived on Friday afternoon and Dad had just finished his second "cocktail". This one went a little better; there were no body shakes, so the nurse gave Tylenol for discomfort instead of Demerol. My Dad, par for the course, tried shaking himself into another dose of Demerol, but the nurse wasn't falling for it. Bummer. His appetite is good and he has managed to get in 3 square meals.
The walls in Dad's room are covered with pictures of his beloved grandkids and he brought with him several cards and notes from friends and family to look at from time to time to remember how much he is loved. They make him happy, so we pull them out on occasion and read through them. Dad also received a very welcome visit from his brother Barry and they enjoyed several hours together. He loves the attention and we are happy to give it.
On Saturday, Dad's platelet levels were pretty low, but they managed to get in one more "cocktail". Again, Dad did very well. Some chills and fever, but still had a good appetite and as always a good sense of humor. When you talk to him, make sure you ask about the “sombrero” and the Mexican hat dance he did on Saturday that had the whole nurse’s station a buzz.
Sunday was the roughest day by far. The platelet level was too low for the 4th and final "cocktail" and Dad was really starting the feel the effects of the treatment. He just felt awful. Erin and Melanie (youngest granddaughter) came up for a visit and Dad really perked up. Dad and Melanie read books, sang You are My Sunshine and played with Melanie’s Little Mermaid doll for a bit. He was very tired though, and not feeling very well...so eventually, Mom, Erin and I got the hint and headed back to San Diego so he could rest. Jeff Jr. has been staying the night in the hospital room with Dad and will be driving him home on Monday! The Grandkids have made a welcome home sign for him and anxiously await his arrival home for some TLC! Round two begins March 9th.
Thanks everyone for surrounding Dad with your healing thoughts and kind words.
Love, Wendy
